Don Bradman Rookie Card

John Henry Connell was born in East Collingwood, Melbourne, Australia on 25 May 1860. The son of Dubliner William Henry Connell and Londoner Mary Ingall, Connell spent his early days working in The Prince’s Bridge Hotel in Melbourne, known colloquially as Young & Jackson’s, and later took on the lease of The Railway Hotel in Elizabeth Street, Melbourne.

Connell became a very successful businessman, and moved from their offices on the corner of Flinders and Market Streets to purpose built offices and warehouses on Bourke Street in 1893.

Connell also developed a taste for collecting art, amassing a huge collection of furniture and art which he donated to the National Gallery of Victoria in 1914.

John Connell died on 9 December 1952, aged 92.
