Reeves’ Chocolate, Glasgow

Reeves’ Chocolate and Cocoa was a chocolate and confectionery maker, based on the corner of Barrowfield Street and Stamford Street, Glasgow from the early 1900s. The company was started by a Mr. Frank Reeve, a Quaker who was born in Leighton Buzzard. Interestingly other famous Quakers include Mr Cadbury and Mr Fry, of chocolate making fame.
Reeves’ was actually a subsidiary of British Automatic Co, who were early makers of wooden vending machines for cigarettes and chocolate, which were often found on railway stations. In later years they produced weighing machines, which many collectors will know dispensed the weight printed onto the back of collectable cards. It is probable that the chocolate made by Reeves’ would have been dispensed from these wooden vending machines.
In later years Reeves’ was famous for its “MB Bars” and “Chelsea Whoppers”. amongst other delights. Reeves’ Chocolate appears to have ceased trading around the late 1950’s.
